DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENTS
November 10, 2020
What’s happening
Despite the 70-degree weather, the holiday season is nearly here. Big Santa has arrived on the North Kalamazoo Mall, holiday lights are on their way to downtown streets, and retailers are busy getting the perfect gift ready for you.

Which is a perfect lead in to our main message this upcoming holiday season: Shop Small in Downtown Kalamazoo. Your support is the difference in making sure local downtown businesses stay open.

Read below for ways you can support local this season:
Support local with Downtown Dollars

And, Small Business Saturday doesn’t end on November 28 – in Downtown Kalamazoo, every Saturday in December is Small Business Saturday. That means even more chances to snag the perfect holiday gift – all while supporting local. Talk about a win-win!

Plus, when shopping at a downtown retailer this Small Business Saturday, customers will receive an “I Shopped Local – Downtown Kalamazoo” pin. Share a picture of you with your pin and spread the message of shopping local throughout the entire holiday season.
Donate on #GivingTuesday

Beyond spending locally, this #GivingTuesday, please consider a donation to the Kalamazoo Downtown Partnership as we work to support businesses and bring new programs, initiatives and investments to downtown Kalamazoo.

The Partnership is the entity behind many meaningful projects in downtown including the reimagining of Bates Alley into a vibrant event space, the creation of the Central Commons Refreshment Area, and events such as SkeleTour, Beats on Bates, and Santa’s Workshop.

A donation to the Partnership supports identifying innovative solutions for public spaces, activating vacant spaces, driving foot traffic, and marketing, promoting, and supporting downtown businesses.

Those interested in joining in the Kalamazoo Downtown Partnership #GivingTuesday initiative can:
  1. Set up a regular donation of $10 per month or more to support the Partnership’s work year-round supporting local businesses
  2. Make a one-time donation on our Facebook page to support downtown during the holiday season

Santa’s Workshop, presented by the Radisson Plaza Hotel, is a magical place filled with little animated elves, twinkling lights, and a Jolly old soul!

Things look a little different this year due to the pandemic, but Downtown is committed to providing a safe space to make those holiday memories with your family.

Here’s what you need to know:

Santa has moved to a new location this year at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in the Kalamazoo Room.

Santa visits are safe – visits and storytime are by appointment only, and masks and social distancing will be enforced.

 Santa’s coming to town December 5 – December 24. Santa’s Workshop is open 4-8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturdays, and 12-4 p.m. Sundays through December 20. Special Hours on December 24 from 12-4 p.m.

Visits with Black Santa are back. Visit Black Santa Sundays in December from 12-4 p.m. and December 21-23 from 4-8 p.m.

Enjoy Storytime with Santa Saturdays at 2 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m.

Yes, you can take a picture with Santa – a decorative plexiglass barrier will allow families to capture that coveted holiday photo while being safe. No pictures or visits on Santa’s lap this year.

Kids who visit will get a Santa Letter writing kit to take home. The kit includes all materials needed to send a letter to Santa, a holiday craft, wrapped goodies, and more. There will be several Santa mailboxes, sponsored by Consumer Energy, placed throughout downtown for families to send their letters to Santa.
