Every year, Downtown Kalamazoo offers a series of events, programs and initiatives to celebrate the winter holiday season. This year is no different, but the events, program and initiatives offered will be. In light of public health concerns related to COVID-19, the Kalamazoo Downtown Partnership is working with the community to reimagine the 2020 holiday season.
“We are working with our community partners, leadership network and businesses to create a new and different holiday experience Downtown,” said Kalamazoo Downtown Partnership Events Director Sue Huggett. “We are in the planning stages to create new and unique experiences for the community. Our team believes this is an opportunity to innovate, be creative, and explore new ideas, programming, and initiatives to bring our community together and celebrate the holiday season.”
The most notable change to this year’s festivities is the cancellation of Downtown Kalamazoo’s Annual Holiday Parade, due to the large crowd it draws and public health concerns related to COVID-19. Additionally, the Holly Jolly Trolley, which usually runs from late November through December, will take the season off this year.
But Downtown visitors can and should still expect a full schedule of initiatives and events during the holiday season, featuring activities and experiences families and friends can do on their own time and in a safe, socially-distant manner. Among the ideas being discussed are enhanced lighting, expanded decorations, changes to Santa’s Workshop, new business-focused initiatives and socially-distant attractions.
“We can’t wait to announce this year’s holiday program, which will incorporate so may new ideas developed by our community members,” said Huggett. “We think this year’s holiday season will be our best year yet.”
Once available, a complete schedule of events and more information will be found at downtownkalamazoo.org.
