Arcadia Creek Festival Place to Host Major Festivals Before Renovation
Several of downtown Kalamazoo’s signature festivals will return to Arcadia Creek Festival Place this summer as the City of Kalamazoo prepares to begin construction on the site’s planned renovation later this year.
The City of Kalamazoo has worked closely with downtown partners and event organizers to adjust the construction timeline so major community festivals can still take place in 2026 without delaying the overall redevelopment project.
Arcadia Creek Festival Place is scheduled to undergo a major redesign that will transform the space into a more dynamic public gathering place, supporting both large festivals and everyday public use. Based on the latest construction planning, the City determined work could begin later in the year, allowing festivals to proceed this summer.
“As construction planning became more defined, we realized there was an opportunity to adjust the schedule so we could support this year’s festival season while still keeping the project on track,” said Rebekah Kik, deputy city manager for the City of Kalamazoo. “These events are an important part of downtown Kalamazoo’s identity and economy, and we wanted to do everything we could to continue welcoming them downtown.”
The following festivals are currently planned to take place at Arcadia Creek Festival Place in 2026:
- Kalamazoo Pride: June 5–6
- Caribbean Festival: June 26–27
- Kalamazoo Valley Blues Festival: July 10–11 (location subject to confirmation by organizers)
- Canadiana Fest: September 19
These events represent some of the largest and most popular festivals held in downtown Kalamazoo each year. Together, these events bring tens of thousands of visitors to downtown Kalamazoo each summer, supporting local businesses and helping make the city one of Southwest Michigan’s most active festival destinations.
Festivals at Arcadia Creek Festival Place play an important role in supporting the vibrancy of downtown Kalamazoo. Data from 2025 events shows that nearly 27,000 people visited Arcadia Creek Festival Place during these festivals, many traveling from across the region. About one in five festivalgoers also visits a downtown restaurant, shop, or hotel before or after the event, demonstrating how festivals help drive activity throughout downtown.
Kalamazoo Pride, organized by OutFront Kalamazoo, takes place during Downtown’s traditional summer kick-off JumpstART weekend and is downtown Kalamazoo’s largest summer festival. The event is OutFront Kalamazoo’s largest fundraising event of the year and has drawn an average of more than 20,000 attendees in recent years. It is also the second largest Pride celebration in Michigan.
This year’s event will be structured to feel more like a music festival, with multiple stages hosting concurrent performances throughout the weekend.
“Pride is for everyone,” said OutFront’s executive director Christopher Terkos (he/him). “And this year’s festival is going to feel more dynamic than ever, as we bring ourselves that much closer to an event that truly reflects our community.”
Outside of these scheduled events, Arcadia Creek Festival Place will remain closed to the public while periodic pre-construction activities take place. Construction fencing will remain around the site throughout the season, and the pedestrian bridge within the park will remain closed due to its condition.
The site was fenced in early 2026 to allow crews to begin early preparation work for the project, including soil sampling, environmental analysis, and permitting upcoming demolition activities such as the pedestrian bridge replacement. These steps help ensure the project remains on schedule as the City of Kalamazoo prepares to bid demolition work later this year. Following the festival season, the renovation project is expected to move forward after Labor Day.
“We have a strong partnership with downtown businesses and event organizers, and we wanted to be thoughtful about how this project moves forward,” Kik said. “This approach allows us to support a strong festival season while keeping the redevelopment project moving efficiently.”
The redesigned Arcadia Creek Festival Place will include several new features developed with community and stakeholder input, including a new pedestrian bridge, multiple performance stages, a playground and water features, an open-air pavilion and amphitheater, a public plaza, and an activated alley along the west side of the site.
Plans for the site also include space at the north end of the property for a future mixed-use building that would provide restrooms as well as storage and event support space. The building is being considered as a separate project and will follow a different timeline.
The redesigned park is expected to reopen in 2027, while planning and development of the mixed-use building may continue beyond that timeframe.
“Festivals like these bring incredible energy to downtown Kalamazoo,” said Curt Aardema, chair of the Downtown Development Authority and Downtown Economic Growth Authority. “They introduce new visitors to downtown, support our restaurants and shops, and showcase Kalamazoo as a creative, arts-driven community that is always evolving. The new features of Arcadia Creek Festival Place, along with the downtown event center opening in fall 2027, will further cement downtown Kalamazoo as a vibrant place to visit and enjoy.”
