During this Gallery Gathering\, we will discuss two artworks from these series featured in For the People\, By the People.

DESCRIPTION:Farmers Alley Theatre is set to open its 19th season with a new comedy\, My Mother and the Michigan/Ohio War\, by Paul Stroili\, running September 17-October 4. Stroili\, who wrote and directed the theatre’s Season 17 hit\, A Jukebox for the Algonquin returns to direct. This hilarious and heartwarming play enjoyed a sold-out world premiere at The Purple Rose Theatre in 2025. \nIzzy’s husband Freddy was a history buff with one dream: a full-scale reenactment of a battle from the Michigan-Ohio War. But when a bizarre papier-mâché accident leaves Izzy a widow\, this Michigan Matriarch calls on her Wolverine daughter and Buckeye son to see Freddy’s vision realized. Historical becomes hysterical as they clash over everything from tofu to Toledo to goal posts to Gordon Lightfoot. Don’t miss this award-winning comedy about family\, football and the fight for the Toledo strip. \nReturning to Farmers Alley is Stroili’s Misery costar\, Laura Jordan\, who will play the 4th wall-breaking matriarch\, Izzy. Another Kalamazoo favorite will join the cast as the Buckeye son with a touch of OCD\, Brandon Foxworth (The Christians). Finishing off the trifecta and making her Farmers Alley debut is Caitlin Cavannaugh as Carey: Izzy’s tightly-wound\, Wolverine daughter. Caitlin originated the role of Carey in the World premiere production. \nMy Mother and the Michigan/Ohio War will run for 3 weeks only: September 17 through October 4th. SUMMARY:Artists' Exchange: Indigenous Voices and the Future of American Art
DESCRIPTION:“During this special program\, three contemporary Indigenous artists from across the country will come together to discuss their artistic approaches\, points of inspiration\, and visions for the future. Speakers include Dakota Mace (Diné)\, Cara Romero (Chemehuevi)\, Kelly Church (Pottawatomi/Ottawa/Ojibwe). Mace’s work focuses on translating the language of Diné history and beliefs while pushing the viewer’s understanding of Diné culture through alternative photography techniques\, weaving\, beadwork\, and papermaking. Photographer Cara Romero uses contemporary techniques to depict the modernity of Native peoples\, illuminating Indigenous worldviews and aspects of supernaturalism in everyday life. Kelly Church is a black ash basket maker\, a fiber artist\, and a strong advocate for the survival of Native traditions through her work in educating the public about the endangered black ash tree. \nMace’s multimedia piece Tsin Bigaan (Branches) and Romero’s photographic print Arla Lucia are on view in the exhibition For the People\, By the People: America at 250\, and Church’s woven black ash piece Every Dawn is a New Day is on view in our permanent collection exhibition. \nGalleries open at 11am\, and admission is included with the price of program attendance. \nTicket Prices:\nKIA Members – $10\nNon-members – $15\nCollege students – $5

DESCRIPTION:“Sociolinguist Noriko Sugimori has often worked with her students to collect oral histories from Japanese-speaking World War II survivors in Japan\, South Korea\, and the United States. Their testimonies reveal personal experiences that have often remained untold and show how the past continues to shape the present. Drawing on video excerpts from these interviews\, Dr. Sugimori will explore the stories\, silences\, and meanings preserved in wartime memory. \nDr. Sugimori is Professor of Japanese at Kalamazoo College. Her Mellon Foundation-funded Japanese-English oral history project was the first in using the bilingual Oral History Metadata Synchronizer. At Kalamazoo College\, she teaches the Japanese language at all levels\, as well as sociolinguistics.”

DESCRIPTION:“Jimmy Mirikitani (1920-2012) was a Japanese American artist who survived the trauma of WWII incarceration\, the loss of family and friends in his ancestral city of Hiroshima\, a harsh life on the streets of New York\, and the chaos of 9/11 – all by making art. Sitting alone on a windy corner in Soho\, he drew whimsical cats\, bleak concentration camps\, and the angry red flames of the atomic bomb. Blending beauty and humor with tragedy and loss\, The Cats of Mirikitani is an intimate exploration of the lingering wounds of war and the healing power of art. \nThis film was directed and produced by Linda Hattendorf\, who has worked in the New York documentary community for decades. Her editing work has aired on PBS\, A&E\, and The Sundance Channel\, as well as in theatrical venues and hundreds of festivals. Produced in 2006\, The Cats of Mirikitani was her directorial debut and won awards at more than thirty film festivals around the world. The film has a run time of 74 minutes. “

DESCRIPTION:Described as “an intrepid improviser” by Michael Barone (host of American Public Media’s Pipedreams)\, internationally renowned organist David Briggs frequently performs improvisations to silent films such as Phantom of the Opera\, Hunchback of Notre-Dame\, and a variety of Charlie Chaplin films. \nAt our October 20 Festival event\, David will improvise the score for the 1927 silent-film thriller The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog\, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. \nThe six-piece ensemble collectively known as “Silent But Deadly” will be opening the show with live scores for four short horror films: \n– The House of the Devil (1896)\n– The X-Rays (1898)\n– The Doll’s Revenge (1907)\n– The Witch (1906) \n—- \nAdvance tickets are $17 general admission\, $14 for seniors/active military and veterans\, $5 for ages 25 and under\, and $40 for families (2 adults + the kids). \n—- \nCelebrate the unifying power of the world’s music at the 2026 Connecting Chords Music Festival\, running from August 14 – November 29.
