Grab a drink or bite to eat and enjoy performances by exciting jazz and classical artists\, including this year’s talented class of Gilmore Jazz Fellows\, hosted by special guest saxophonist\, composer\, and bandleader Andrew Rathbun—who will also take the stage for performances of his own. \nRathbun is a Toronto-born artist known for his depth of lyricism\, authoritative swing\, and compositional intelligence on tenor and soprano saxophones. He has recorded as a leader since the late 1990s with ensembles featuring artists such as Kenny Wheeler\, Billy Hart\, George Garzone\, Bill Stewart\, and Phil Markowitz. His music is rooted in post-bop jazz and informed by classical composition. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Artful Evening with Elizabeth Semmelhack\, Director and Senior Curator of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto! Semmelhack is the curator of Future Now: Virtual Sneakers to Cutting-Edge Kicks. During this program\, she will talk about why shoes matter and about how designers today are revolutionizing what we will put on our feet tomorrow. If you’ve enjoyed Future Now\, don’t miss this opportunity to meet the curator behind the exhibition! \nSemmelhack’s work focuses on the intersections of fashion\, culture\, and economics\, with a particular interest in the history of footwear. She is widely quoted in the media from the New York Times to Vogue\, and since starting at the Bata Shoe Museum in 2000\, she has curated over thirty exhibitions and written fourteen books and catalogues and over thirty chapters and articles. Currently an Associate Professor at Michigan State University and Associate Director of Jazz Studies\, Napoleon cut his teeth touring with pianist Benny Green\, The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra\, Michael Bublé\, and a thirteen year tenure with Freddy Cole. Napoleon has performed or arranged on over seventy records including the Grammy-nominated releases\, Freddy Cole Sings Mr. B and My Mood Is You. He performed on The Clayton Hamilton Orchestra: Live at MCG\, and is featured on Buble’s Grammy-nominated recording Caught in the Act.
