Downtown Kalamazoo is shaped not just by buildings and streets, but by what happens right where they meet. Join us for a hands-on workshop with Yard & Co. exploring the “First 16 Feet”, the critical space between the sidewalk and storefront that influences whether people stop, stay, and come back.

This interactive session brings together City staff, downtown stakeholders, property owners, and community partners to explore how small, coordinated improvements at the ground level can create a more welcoming, vibrant, and economically active downtown.

It’s not required, but please RSVP to help us plan.

What You’ll Experience

Participants will take part in a guided, real-world exploration of downtown Kalamazoo, followed by interactive discussions and exercises. You’ll gain practical tools and fresh perspectives on how to shape the everyday experience of downtown, from first impressions to lasting connections.

What You’ll Learn

  • How the First 16 Feet shapes perception and behavior: understand how storefronts, sidewalks, and street edges influence how people experience a place.
  • Strategies for activation and placemaking: explore how programming, pop-ups, and small interventions can bring energy to downtown spaces.
  • How to strengthen downtown through coordination: learn how aligning events, partners, and investments can create a more cohesive and engaging environment.
  • Real-world examples and case studies: See how other cities have used similar strategies to boost foot traffic, support local businesses, and build stronger identities.

Why It Matters

The First 16 Feet is where downtown comes to life. By focusing on this critical space, Kalamazoo can create a more inviting, connected, and resilient downtown, one that supports local businesses, encourages exploration, and enhances quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
